Turn Medium into a cash machine

  • Make your title punchy. “How to make money on Medium,” blah. “Turn Medium into a cash machine!” Yay!
  • Keep articles short. Medium readers are at work stealing personal computer time. Keep articles within the 2–8 minute range.
  • Keep your sentences short and snappy. Limit each paragraph to 3–5 sentences. Place white space between paragraphs. Readers love white space.
  • No idea is new. We all rehash ideas. Most “how to write articles,” are the same ideas expressed in a different form. We read the same types of articles to reinforce our learning and for a personal pep talk.
  • There are very few great writers, most are bad with good editors. People rarely read hi-brow literature, they crave junk. Write for the people who like your junk.
  • Read a lot of how-to Medium articles with 10k likes (claps). Follow the template of successful articles. They are successful because Medium readers expect a certain template even though they don’t realize it.
  • Write to a third-grade level. Don’t make your readers search word meanings. By writing simply you will reach the largest audience.
  • The cliche’, “a picture is worth a thousand words,” is a cliche’ because it’s true. If your article is good, but blah, spice it up with some pictures, as long as they relate to the subject.
  • Don’t shy from controversy. Break the rules of writing. Self-publishing means you control your content not some suit in a corner office.
  • Lastly, party less, write more.
